About your skin...
Your skin covers an area of around 20 square feet, it regulates your body temperature, absorbs environmental elements, excretes wastes and more.
The skin is made up of several layers, the epidermis is the outermost protective layer of the skin and is made up of nerve fibres and tiny cells which shed constanly. The skin is the body's first defence against bacterial infections.
The rate at which the cells renews varies according to your age. For 15 to 25 year olds the epidermis cells renew, on average, every 20 days, during the 30's the average renewal rate slows to 28 days. As this process slows the skin becomes less active, accumulating more dead skin cells on the surface. These cells are bound together by natural gluelike secretions, forming a thin veil over the skin, this is what causes the skin to look dull and lack lustre and resilience.
The dermis is located just under the epidermis, and this is often called the "true skin". The dermis secretes perspiration and sebum, controls hair growth and covers connective tissue. Sebum, produced by sebaceous glands that are attached to hair cuticles, lubricates the skin's surface as well as the growing hair. Thus, the sebaceous glads produce a kind of natural moisturiser that keeps the skin soft and supple.
A healthy dermis is supple and flexible due to an appropriate amount of elastin and collagen, both of which ensure strength and resilience.
To keep your skin at its healthiest, you need a good skin care regime using floral waters, essential oils and fixed oils and butters, as well as the usual - adequate rest, good diet and exercise.
